WHY ARE MARBLE SEALERS NECESSARY?

Marble is very soft and prone to damage so it is important to apply a coat of high-quality marble sealing agent before proceeding with the grout. This seal is also important because marble is very porous and grout can cause stains in the stone. Marble floors are easy to clean, as long as they’ve been sealed. A general floor cleaner and a mop will do the trick, however, never use an acidic cleaning agent as this will erode minerals. Natural unsealed stone can be washed in the same way as sealed stone, although it might be harder to remove tough stains.

The right maintenance of marble counters helps preserve the stone’s beauty, integrity, and value. Using a sealer is part of a system of care for any marble because the porosity makes it more prone to staining. A sealer doesn’t prevent stains from happening in the first place. Instead, it helps buy time from a stain settling into the stone’s soft surface. Some sealers also offer some level of protection from etching, which results from acid reacting with the calcium carbonate and causes the surface to dull or etches like a scratch in the stone.

Sealing marble regularly is especially important for countertops because kitchens and bathroom install typically include a sink, which means marble will frequently come in contact with water. Additionally, common things like coffee, fruit juice, oil, lotion, lipstick, and other cosmetics can penetrate the pores of the stone if not wiped up quickly enough.

The water absorption rate is also affected by the stone’s finish. Polished marble won’t absorb as many liquids as unfinished marble because it had a lot of the pores removed during the finishing process, while honed marble will absorb more than polished marble but less than unfinished marble.

This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t use marble, it just means you need to be mindful of spills and blot them up quickly. Here are the best ways to take care of your marble countertop.

Dust Mop. Removing. the grit and dirt from your floor regularly are key to protect it. Use a soft natural dust mop, not one with pads that we treat with chemicals, to remove the dirt of the day. Be sure to clean the dust mop after every use to not reapply the dirt the next time.

Use Mats and Rugs. In high traffic areas and at entry points, use area rugs or runners, and wipe your feet before entry. This helps to keep small rocks and other debris from scratching your beautiful marble tile floors. Make sure the rug has a non-skid backing for safety.

Vacuum Cleaner Warnings. If you want to use a vacuum cleaner on your marble floor, be sure to use only brush attachments, not plastic or metal attachments. It is recommended to never use an upright vacuum on a marble floor as the wheels and other pieces can damage the finish.

Blot up Spills Quickly. Spills are inevitable, and not a disaster, as long as they are blotted up quickly. Do not wipe the spill, as it will spread the liquid to other areas. Once blotted, flush the area with a solution of mild dish soap and water. Wipe clean to remove the solution, and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth.
